THE DECEITS BLEND POP & POST-PUNK ON “ALL WE ARE (ARE MEMORIES)”
The talented trio, hailing from Pico Rivera, CA, formed in 2021. Deceits have released a moody, introspective single. “All We Are (Are Memories)” somehow uplifts because the sonic elements are uptempo, bright, and melodic.
The thoughtful track was mixed and recorded in immaculate sound, with every instrument clearly defined and standing out, including Skylar Francis's driving fretwork and Francisco Saenz's crisp rhythmic percussive touches.
“All We Are (Are Memories)” is very reminiscent of the best songs of The Cure, which are countless classics. Deceits are already in good company, taking their stylistic cues from that seminal band. Kevin “Puppy” Moreno is the lead vocalist, playing bass guitar and keyboards. Moreno also undeniably recalls legendary frontman Robert Smith when he sings.
Deceits can’t be pigeonhole and put in a box based on a genre or two because their influences are more far-reaching and diverse. They encompass alternative rock and pay homage to Interpol.
“All We Are (Are Memories)” is actually a very good song title. Haunting and romantic, the single strikes an immediate emotional chord lyrically. The brooding track expresses the feeling of being helpless, especially in an ever-evolving world that never stays the same.
When that special person you love is torn away from you, there is also uncertainty and a sense of imbalance. In essence, some things in life are fated to happen a particular way, and there is nothing anyone can do to stop them.
“All We Are (Are Memories)” keeps the post-punk, gothic, and alternative music tradition alive and moving forward. The engrossing track offers new generations of listeners a new spin and vitality while acknowledging its past roots and origins.
Deceits will perform at The Cruel World Fest 2025 on Saturday, May 17th, at the Sad Girl Stage, Brookside, at the Pasadena Rose Bowl from 12:15 to 12:45 p.m.
