VIOLET ULTRARAY STUNS IN DEBUT SINGLE “RIDE”
Indie-pop is SO back. In the mid-2010s, the subgenre reigned supreme. From Walk The Moon to The 1975, artists redefined what indie music was. There was a contagious energy about it; maybe it was the Doc Martens and flannels, or perhaps it was the ethereal soundscapes from the period’s music that did it. Violet UltraRay is a brand new artist, but they match this vibe perfectly in their debut single, “ride.”
It starts slow and steady before it builds into an incredible crescendo that feels more like an emotional release. The single doesn’t sound like anything that’s out right now, though Violet UltraRay lists several inspirations — from Best Coast to Slowdive.
My only wish is that the vocalist’s enunciation was a bit clearer, since some of these lyrics are amazingly poetic. Though I’m not one to talk, as a Fall Out Boy fan…
Regardless, “ride” showcases big potential for these newcomers. If you had told me Violet UltraRay was already on their 3rd ep and signed to an indie label, I’d have believed you!
Plus, the song has an incredible backstory. The band was inspired by the singer’s uncle’s unreleased music. “ride” was pieced together from these findings. How cool is that?!
