THE GUILTY PARTIES’ THOUGHT-PROVOKING SINGLE “THE LAST STAND” ENCOURAGES MEANINGFUL CHANGE
Ska heroes The Guilty Parties remind audiences of the genre’s mission statement. Fun and invigorating, ska often acts as an escape; complete horn sections and catchy hooks cause chaotic mosh pits. However, the genre intends to implement punk-rock mentalities and values, questioning the establishment and providing a real-world perspective. “The Last Stand” is relatable, relevant, and perfectly expressive.
Instrumentally, the track kicks butt. A classic genre-staple rhythm guides the moving verses and chorus, with powerful vocals rounding out the mix. Though traditionally very ska, the song borrows from other alternative subgenres well. The lead vocals remind me of The Audition, an “emo” post-punk alternative band of “Warm Me Up” hit single fame.
The current political and economic climate requires good ska bands like The Guilty Parties. Their perspective on things is what many are feeling internally, finally being brought to life. When performed live, the audience experience would be nothing short of cathartic, an escape, even if only for a brief moment.
Though easy to sell your soul for a quick profit, The Guilty Parties’ “The Last Stand” serves as a reminder that collective change and reformation of outdated systems is far superior to a quick win. Perseverance is critical, but it’s normal to feel frustrated—and what better place to vent those frustrations than skanking in the pit at a ska show?
