The Bobby Lees are still riding high after releasing their triumphant comeback album, New Self, this past June. Their latest single, “Outlaw,” dives deeper into vocalist Sam Quartin’s hip-hop project, Lady Boy, bringing fuzzed-out, distorted basslines and thunderous, lockstep drums to this fiery, rap-driven track.
Clocking in at roughly two and a half minutes, “Outlaw” is a blistering takedown of the digital dystopia we’ve all found ourselves living in. Quartin fires off sharp, confrontational lyrics aimed squarely at the big tech machine, delivering each line with the kind of urgency and attitude that made The Bobby Lees such a force in the first place.
The song’s lo-fi, glitch-heavy production, paired with the grainy digicam aesthetic of its accompanying music video, feels ripped straight from the late ’90s and early 2000s. It has a raw, rebellious spirit that wouldn't sound out of place alongside material from Rage Against the Machine’s The Battle of Los Angeles.
The manic energy of The Bobby Lees’ garage-punk roots is still very much alive. It’s just been dragged through a layer of 21st-century grime and redirected into something more calculated and confrontational. Fewer jabs, more uppercuts. Make no mistake, the Bobby Lees still pack one hell of a punch.
