THE ALTERED HOURS EMBRACE ALTERNATIVE ROCK AND SHOEGAZE IN THEIR NEWEST SINGLE “TURN AWAY”
Post-2010s indie-rock has taken many turns since its heyday. Now, artists are playfully experimental, finding new ways to express themselves artistically. The Altered Hours do this extraordinarily well in their new single, “Turn Away.” The track feels familiar while venturing off into something entirely new. It’s deliciously indie while dreamily fading into shoegaze territory occasionally.
Though the song is anything but pretentious.
Instead, its inherent charm relies on duetting lead vocals. The way the contrasting vocal style overlaps with each other is enjoyable to the ears. Sure, it’s an aesthetic choice, but one that speaks to artistic chemistry between the two performers. This (literal) harmony allows for compositional intrigue, especially as different elements intertwine with each other.
For example, the guitars do get pretty gaze-y. They are distorted in a way that’s recognizably influenced by the genre, but the overlapping guitars are clean enough to contrast that. Moreover, there’s a distinct bassline throughout the track, which matches the drums perfectly.
The group has been making a name for itself at home. However, their sonic versatility and impressively captivating mixes make them a strong contender for overseas success. The Altered Hours could cultivate a strong audience here in the USA, mainly because we don’t have anything quite like them here right now.
“Turn Away” offers both dynamic storytelling and tension, making it easily repeatable for most listeners.
