Austin's Strange Lot continues building anticipation for their forthcoming self-titled debut album with "Eyes 4 Ya," a hypnotic slice of psychedelic rock that feels equally nostalgic and refreshingly modern. The album arrives August 14 via Greenway Records, following a string of well-received singles that have earned universal praise.
"Eyes 4 Ya" immediately sinks its hooks into the listener with a swirling wall of fuzz, hypnotic grooves, and dreamy melodies. The release marks another important step for a band whose story almost ended before it truly began. In 2022, songwriter Dominic Mena found himself without a band and on the verge of abandoning Strange Lot altogether. Rather than walking away, he returned to the project's roots, writing and recording alone with the goal of creating something that pushed beyond the familiar territory of the '90s psych rock revival.
Over the course of a month, Mena crafted nearly 30 demos, laying the foundation for what would become the band's debut album. He later enlisted Alex Maas, who described the material as "fresh" before stepping in to produce the record. Together they spent the following year refining the songs, with Mena recording the material and Maas helping shape its direction. Mixing duties on several key tracks, including "5AM," "Timeline Drops," "Hatin' You," and "Always Alone," were handled by Jim Eno, while legendary mastering engineer Howie Weinberg brought the project across the finish line.
With the album complete, Mena assembled a new lineup to bring the music to life on stage. The refreshed incarnation of Strange Lot has already turned heads, recently wrapping up a tour supporting Melody's Echo Chamber, including performances at Webster Hall in New York City and The Belasco in Los Angeles.

“Eyes For Ya” has a dark, hazy atmosphere that blends psych, shoegaze, and synth textures. What was the initial spark for the song, and how did you know it captured the direction you wanted for the record?
“It was an idea I kept rewriting over and over, and at one point there was a version with no guitars at all, just synths. I knew there was something special about it, but I hadn't quite found its identity yet. As we started defining the record's direction, I wanted to pull it away from straight rock and roll and into a more modern, textural space."
“Alex Maas brought an idea that really leaned into atmosphere and gave the song a completely different face. I remember him saying he wanted it to "blow his head off" when it came in, and that became the goal. From there, every decision was about building that sense of impact and making the song feel immersive rather than just heavy. I think that's when it really clicked as a defining moment for the record.”
After rebuilding Strange Lot from the ground up and writing nearly 30 demos in a month, what made “Eyes For Ya” stand out as an essential piece of the album’s story?
“It was the first song where I felt like we'd found a new lane for the band. I've always loved guitar-driven music, but I wanted to explore how far we could push the atmosphere, textures, and production without losing the energy that made us a rock band in the first place. "Eyes For Ya" felt like the moment those two worlds finally came together.”
Working with Alex Maas, Jim Eno, and Howie Weinberg brought several distinct perspectives into the process. How did each collaborator help shape the final sound of “Eyes For Ya” without losing the intimacy of those original home-recorded demos?
“Alex was instrumental in preserving the spirit of the demos. We connected over the "feel" of the songs, and he always made sure we never lost the emotion that made the demos special.”
“Jim brought an incredible energy and instinct for making the songs feel bigger without sacrificing their character, and Howie was the final polish, adding the depth and cohesion that made the record feel complete.”
