Denver’s indie-punk vanguard, Public Opinion, is making its return with a new three-track EP titled Perpetual Motion Machine, arriving on September 19 via their newly signed label, SideOneDummy Records. This release signals a fresh chapter for the band following the momentum they gathered with last year’s debut album Painted on Smile — a mix of melody and raw punk intensity.
Leading the charge is the EP’s opening single, “Laughing Academy,” featuring a furious guest verse from Patrick Kindlon of Drug Church. It’s a fiery dual attack: swaggering garage-rock guitars powering into an explosive chorus — a sonic one-upmanship that's as visceral as it is catchy.
Vocalist Kevin Hart reflects on the EP’s title, saying it encapsulates the existential burnout of keeping the creative flame alive: *“It could be taken as 'Why are we doing this still?' I’ve shaped my life to create music, so when returns start diminishing, it can feel like 'What the fuck have I done to myself?'” The quote drives home the grit and stubbornness that fuel the band’s drive.
Perpetual Motion Machine pushes forward from the edges of hardcore into broader alt-rock, dialing up hooks without shying away from confrontation. Recorded with Christian Gutierrez and mixed by Brett Romnes (I Am the Avalanche, The Movielife), the EP finds Public Opinion sharpening their formula — melodic, primal, and packed with emotional truth.
To support the release, the band will hit the road this fall alongside Militarie Gun and Liquid Mike, with a special opening slot for Alkaline Trio in Boulder pending. It’s a ride through arenas and DIY spaces that match their expansive yet grounded ethos.
With Perpetual Motion Machine, Public Opinion are proving that they’re not just survivors of the punk underground — they’re still crafting something that burns brighter than ever.
