SONG PREMIERE: KIT MAJOR KICKS DOWN DOUBT IN NEW TRACK “MISS EGO”
Up-and-coming rockstar Kit Major shows true strength in “Miss Ego,” the title track of her upcoming EP. With a guitar that buzzes through your senses, the LA-based artist channels her inner Bikini Kill in sound, passion, and overall message.
The track harnesses that classic riot grrl edge while still maintaining a uniqueness in flow and delivery. Her matter-of-fact speaking lyrics detail the complicated experience of womanhood in the rock scene – a sometimes taunting but necessary endeavor. Being a woman, especially in male-dominant spaces, can be tough – Kit Major knows this all too well. From constant doubt from peers to not being taken seriously to feeling inadequate, these sentiments are true for many. Here, she takes up space with pride, shedding off the negativity that the world pushes towards her. Instead of projecting it back, she leads with power and a true “IDGAF” attitude.

You’ve described Miss Ego as emerging from a period of writer’s block — specifically choosing between two songs built around the same idea: “there’s no room in bed for Miss Ego.” Where did that concept originate, and what kept drawing you back to it?
“The concept originated from me realizing that I have an ego- we all do, but I think I was in denial of mine because of how often I find myself making sure it’s as small as possible to not be a bother. But it gets bruised, and it’s not a trait I admire... which is what made me keep returning to it and asking, “Is it wrong to want the world?” When I was younger, I didn’t overthink it as much. Ego is in creativity. I wanted to channel that unapologetic mentality with the visuals for this song and era. Maybe it’s from getting older and being more self-aware of what I’m doing, but I wanted to turn that off and take up both sides of the bed without thinking twice, like any man.”
How have you seen the punk scene evolve through your own experience, and where would you like to see it continue to grow?
“I think the versatility of sound and style has been one I am intrigued by. The shows I’ve been to and the shows I've been on, there’s been a crossover between traditional punk and newer punk. I don’t know if I can fully articulate it, but there’s a certain heart that comes from the punk ethos that I think anyone can pick up on- both in the music and in how people show up. I don’t think I’m saying anything new here, but it’s the part of the punk scene that makes me feel the most at home. Like, I don’t give a shit how punk you look, if you have the heart, that’s all that matters. I like how that is a flower in the scene that continues to be watered.”
“Miss Ego” carries a defiant, sardonic take on the idea of a girl having an ego — as if it’s something unexpected or even taboo. Was it cathartic to write from that perspective and lean into that voice?
“It was. I think the second I gave myself permission to get other people’s opinions out of the way and lean into something that felt a little taboo, it made it a lot easier to actually get the message off my chest. Even playing it live and introducing the song at recent shows, I found myself getting a little shy, which kind of tells me this was something I needed to say.”
Her vocals are akin to the gritty violence of Courtney Love with a breathy tone that matches Hayley Williams’ vibe. An absolute anthem for confidence, the track inspires you to take a stand in life through its fuzzy, chaotic rhythm.
Kit Major is a force to be reckoned with, giving edge and energy at every second on the track. Never once does she back down, commanding a space up front with all the greats: “I wanted this for my life, and that’s not changing.” Look out for her new EP, fittingly titled ‘Miss Ego,’ on June 12.
