PARADISE VULTURES PREMIERE SULTRY NEW SINGLE “MISANTHROPOCENE”

Local heroes Paradise Vultures continually release banger after banger. They were first brought to my attention when they shared “Catacombs” with us last year. Now, they’re back and better than ever with a multilayered new single, “Misanthropocene.”

In my last review, I compared Paradise Vultures to Panic! At the Disco, much to their happy confusion—now, I am doubling down. The lyricism of “Misanthropocene” is nothing short of Ryan Ross or Dallon Weekes’ levels of mad genius. Plus, the two Panic! lyricists (of different eras) are known for teaching young audiences (hi!) new SAT words.

“‘Misanthropocene’ is a portmanteau I created, which is a combination of misanthrope (one who distrusts, or hates, humanity) and Anthropocene (the current epoch of man),” says vocalist Tommy Senter. “Combined, this word represents our current societal trend toward distrust in others and increasing isolation and bitterness toward others.”

Sonically, the track veers miles away from ‘A Fever You Can’t Sweat Out’ or ‘Too Weird To Live, Too Rare To Die.’ However, it still compares with its utter daringness to pull glistening rabbits out of a massive top hat. The guitar layers weave in between a sturdy bass riff like magic. Additionally, this is Senter’s best vocal performance to date.

Much like contemporaries Twenty One Pilots, I am facing a similar conundrum where it’s difficult to fathom that it’s only two guys doing all this.

I’ll continue to stand on my soapbox for Paradise Vultures as long as they allow me to. “Misanthropocene” is their best work—these vultures will continue to soar from here.
