THE PADRES’ NEW SINGLE “ANIMALS” IS A DEBAUCHED, RAW GOOD TIME
Gleefully singing in a disjointed and rough-around-the-edges manner at the top of their lungs, The Padres sound like they are ready for the next wild adventure in “Animals” or living a dream or a fantasy of one. But in reality, it’s a studio project of Torgeir Tysse, the songwriter/composer. He collaborated with Simen Hallse and Anders Fretheim.
The Padres have a forthcoming new album, ‘Teenage Mutant Ninja Tunes.’ Unfortunately, after years of going through rehab because of a climbing accident, Tysse said the “idea was born to uncritically write indie dadrock that made him happy.” The end result is a ridiculously great and raucous song called “Animals” which is hardly dadrock. “Fuck and Fight like Animals” sounds like a mantra and battle cry for exulting youthful independence rather than an aging dude going through a middle-life crisis.
The setup is The Padres had a crazy night of implied hard partying. They collectively recount the woozy effects of falling asleep and waking the next day looking up unflinchingly at the blinding sun. The musical backdrop to all this chaotic mayhem is frenetic, melodic strumming guitars, ragged rhythms of bass and drums plus off-the-rails, blaring, and punk-rock-influenced singing. Imagined or real, “Animals” is a very convincing and credible song. Everyone at one point in their lives wants to be a rebel and not conform. The Padres speak to that experience wearing it like a ragged badge of honor chased with macho swagger.
