GIRL AS WAVE GETS NOSTALGIC AND INTERSTELLAR IN 80’S SYNTH-DRIVEN POP SINGLE “ASTEROIDS”
Ethereal and sultry, Girl As Wave presents a fascinating contrast. Her '80s-leaning, nostalgic synthesizers and electronic drum beats give way to her subdued, yet emotionally evocative lead vocals. Her latest single, “Asteroids,” explores the extraterrestrial and existential with an aesthetic value that sticks.
She says, “It doesn’t take too much to knock me out of tune.” I beg to differ; though her speaking format may appear easy to an untrained ear, such low, breathy tones are difficult to achieve. Our lead vocalist has spent plenty of time honing in on her voice’s strengths. She fits in well with a certain demographic of singers (perhaps more mall-era than true ‘80s), but her teased-hair contemporaries still don’t quite curate the same effects on listeners.
Typically, songs that seem “simple” to audiences often take more technical skill to achieve. This appears to be no exception, as Girl As Wave has not only curated an unmistakable signature sound but also articulated it flawlessly. It does carry some nostalgic weight, but it also fits into modern landscapes without too much to do.
Sonically, the track has a catchy hook and backup vocals that will remain stuck in my head for weeks to come. Lyrically, “Asteroids” embraces an existential crisis gracefully, understanding that everyone goes through it at some point, “in and out of orbit.”
