THROWN FIRE BACK AT THE NOISE WITH PUNISHING NEW SINGLE “CRITIC”

Swedish metalcore band thrown have been beating the hell out of speakers since forming in Stockholm in 2021. The four-piece introduced themselves with debut single “grayout” through Arising Empire and haven’t exactly taken their foot off the gas since. Heavy riffs, aggressively charged vocals, an EP, and their debut album EXCESSIVE GUILT have helped turn thrown into one of the more exciting names coming out of the modern metalcore scene.

On August 14, thrown return with their newest single, “critic,” once again through Arising Empire. The track opens with an ominous build before exploding into the chorus: “All of a sudden, everyone’s a critic.” From there, it’s an absolute beating. The vocals land somewhere between the attitude of Cane Hill and Fred Durst with the sheer aggression of Knocked Loose thrown into the mix.

Lyrically, “critic” takes aim at modern media culture and our collective obsession with opinions, numbers, analytics, streams, and measuring the success of damn near everything. Everyone has a take, everyone has a metric, and everyone apparently needs you to hear about it. Instead of ignoring all that unsolicited judgment or wasting time arguing with it, thrown did what they do best and turned the frustration into an absolute killer of a track.

There’s also a music video accompanying the release, directed and produced by Midvessel. The video carries the same ominous feeling as the song, pairing a gloomy atmosphere with an aesthetic that feels ripped straight from the mid-2000s. There are shades of Bring Me The Horizon’s “Sleepwalking” and Asking Alexandria’s “The Final Episode,” giving the whole thing a welcome dose of nostalgia without making it feel stuck in the past.

Between the crushing production, massive vocals, and flashes of that older metalcore attitude, thrown continue to sound like a band built for increasingly bigger rooms. If you’ve ever wondered what it might’ve felt like watching a young Bring Me The Horizon start their climb, thrown might scratch that itch.

The band heads to the East Coast this October, so catch them while you can.
