AMERICAN FOOTBALL DIVE DEEP WITH “NO FEELING” FEATURING TURNSTILE’S BRENDAN YATES AND A SURREAL NEW VIDEO
Midwest emo pioneers American Football return with “No Feeling,” a new single and official music video that finds the band stretching their sound in a way that still feels unmistakably their own.
Produced by Sonny DiPerri (known for work with Nine Inch Nails, My Bloody Valentine, and Portugal. The Man), “No Feeling” captures the band at a breaking point, teetering on the edge where emotion begins to lose its meaning. Ethereal synths, interwoven guitars, and chime-like textures sit beneath the confessional delivery of frontman Mike Kinsella, while the unmistakable harmonies of Brendan Yates push the track toward something more expansive and cathartic.
The collaboration came together organically. Kinsella shared, “Brendan came in to sing what I thought would be more of a gang vocal moment. But when he tried a higher harmony, everything clicked instantly. We all looked at each other like, ‘Oh shit, that’s the dude from Turnstile.’ His voice is so singular, and once he sang it in his range, it was clear the part belonged to him.”
The music video, directed by Cady Buche & Travis Barron of Unlimited Time Only, leans fully into that emotional weight while pushing it into something surreal. Known for work with Khruangbin, Leon Bridges, Little Dragon, and Roosevelt, the duo delivers a hallucinogenic, deep-sea narrative that feels both beautiful and unsettling.
The video unfolds like a fever dream beneath the ocean’s surface, ghost-like figures inhabit a sunken ship, dancing and existing in a strange, peaceful afterlife. But that calm is disrupted when a submarine discovers them and begins pulling the ship toward the surface. What starts as something hypnotic quickly spirals into chaos as these ghostly inhabitants are forced into an unfamiliar world above water.
Buche and Barron explained their approach: “When we first heard the song, we kept thinking about places like outer space or the bottom of the ocean, beautiful but also kind of terrifying. There’s this feeling of inevitability in the music. We started imagining what it would look like to flip that idea. Instead of going down with the ship, what if the ship was already down there, thriving? What if something came along and disrupted that?”
That vision carries through in the video’s final moments, where the wreck is lifted by a strange, almost puppet-like system, adding another layer of unease to an already surreal concept.
The release also arrives alongside the announcement of the No Feeling World Tour, with tickets on sale now, and sets the stage for the band’s upcoming album American Football (LP4), due out May 1 via Polyvinyl Record Co..
