PHONEBOY RETURNS WITH ELECTRIC NEW LINEUP PAIRED WITH SINGLE “I LOOK ALIVE” AND ACCOMPANYING MUSIC VIDEO

Indie-rock group Phoneboy has won a diehard fanbase with dedication and earnestness. Its new single, “I Look Alive,” sets the band at a robust and new beginning as it welcomes new member Jordan Torres on lead vocals.

The group's dynamic is unique, with several members taking the lead at various points of the single. This technique adds an element of unity within the band, suggesting they aren’t focused on hogging the spotlight but share it to ensure different creative input is being showcased.

Sonically, the track is super catchy, though the contagiousness of the rhythm and chorus doesn’t diminish its core.

The band says, “’I Look Alive’” is about getting smacked in the face by your insecurities and the little lies you tell to seem like you’re not losing your mind. When you’ve convinced yourself you’re not good enough or excellent enough, it feels like everybody’s eyes are on you, judging every word you say and every move you make.”

This is clear in every second of the song, and especially the music video. The cinematic layout of the video takes an 80s slasher approach to convey nightmare-que feelings. They say that one of the most common nightmares revolves around people losing their teeth, and getting this nightmare just means you’re stressed! Using this metaphor to drive the meaning home is super clever, giving Phoneboy a nice quirky touch and adding to their character.

“I Look Alive” is ironically named (since the song talks about not feeling very alive) but features a lot of movement and meaning. Intricate lyricism and carefully handpicked metaphors will get Phoneboy far!
