TURNSTILE REVISIT MUSIC FROM ‘NEVER ENOUGH’ FOR NPR TINY DESK CONCERT
NPR’s Tiny Desk concert has become synonymous with success. It’s a real “I made it” moment for artists, especially those based in less-discussed genres, like Baltimore’s Turnstile. Lately, the band has received mainstream recognition, including another Tiny Desk performance. They revisited their 2025 LP, Never Enough, for the event.
“DREAMING,” “SUNSHOWER,” “I CARE,” “NEVER ENOUGH,” and “BIRDS” have all been reimagined for the performance. This granted them new life; though already fresh, these reimaginings offer a fresh perspective on the music.
Opening with a smooth, jazzy intro, the stripped-down version of “DREAMING” offers the Branden Yates-fronted band some control in their chaos. Vocally, this performance allows Yates to shine. This stripped-down iteration highlights his impressive vocal range, backed by guitars, pianos, and horns.
The five songs that were reimagined still sound recognizable, just with additional layers that help audiences appreciate each of their moving parts.
For example, the horns section gives each song emotional depth that may have gone unnoticed in its large-scale production. Lyrics are more explicit, and the songs’ meanings are overall more potent.
Turnstile has always been a pioneer within post-hardcore. Their daring, creative risks have made them ones to watch for the better part of a decade. Now, it seems they are embracing that further, taking chances with their NPR performance.
Turnstile is heading on tour next week with SPEED and Jane Remover, including special rotating performances by Amyl & The Sniffers, Blood Orange, and Mannequin Pussy on select dates.
