TIGERS IN CAIRO PERFECT THE ART OF SAN DIEGO PUNK ROCK IN NEW SINGLE “MY SAVING FACE”
A long legacy of punk rock heroes has emerged from San Diego. Blink-182 is the most recognizable San Diego name, due in part to consistent references to their hometown (I miss Sombreros…). However, there’s a distinctive sound within the San Diego punk rock scene, and Tigers In Cairo are bearing that torch boldly, especially in their newest single, “My Saving Face.”
Perhaps their broad range of influences—from shoegaze to pop to skate punk—makes room for their cohesive, signature sound. It’s palpable in every note; a top 40 producer could have written a catchy hook like that, but the song hasn’t lost its edge. Instead, gritty guitar riffs and an imperfect lead vocal add vibrancy to the track. “My Saving Face” is catchy, sure, but above all else, it’s human.
Now, “imperfect” doesn’t mean “bad.” The lead vocal is powerful, technically speaking. There is a sense of intentionality in every breath, and considerable overall control. However, they’re not autotuning to the gods or trying to whisper their way through the song. Instead, “My Saving Face” expresses itself boldly in every aspect of its performance.
Tigers In Cairo emphasize strong arrangements by carefully curated lyrics and a dignified take on punk rock. They’re not trying to emulate anyone, though comparable artists do come to mind. Instead, they’re focused on telling their story as-is.
One might argue that it can’t be classified as “true” punk rock because of its commercial-friendly catchiness.
But that take would be boring.
It’s a great song.
