“SWEET TOOTH” BY J DURAN IS A PLEASANT SURPRISE
J Duran’s eclectic and witty sound could catch the ears of unexpected audiences. “Sweet Tooth” draws from a few clear inspirations, like the Grateful Dead, but sometimes it takes an abrupt exit off of a musical freeway. J Duran’s resistance to sonic self-limitation makes “Sweet Tooth” more than a catchy tune.
There are several elements at play throughout the song that are intriguing. Some layers are absolutely bold and creative choices, though J Duran could wind up on alternative Top 40 radio with an undeniably addicting hook.
The song’s backstory provides context that makes it even sweeter (had to). A repeated lyrical motif, “Life’s been lemons, but I’ve got a sweet tooth” is not only insanely clever, but it captures a sentimental moment between J Duran and his brother.
A common theme in modern music is spiteful hope. The world may be a tough place to exist, but you can make your own lemonade if you have the guts to try…especially when your song has a cool guitar solo in its bridge.
(More people should be putting cool guitar solos in the bridge.)
