SUNGAZE DIGS DEEP IN NEW SINGLE “ALWAYS LOOKING BEHIND”

Slow-moving yet powerful, Sungaze’s new single “Always Looking Behind” is a captivating track that explores the pain of past memories. With ethereal vocals from Ivory Snow, complemented by the Ohio-based band’s flawless sonic synergy, this is an iconic emotional shoegaze ballad.

Revisiting the past can tug on the heartstrings, no matter how far removed your current situation is. Sungaze knows this all too well, exploring this nostalgic pain throughout the track. Snow sings about dust, creaky floorboards, and a familiar street – all to illustrate the sights and feelings of a past memory. She ties it all together with the heartbreakingly relatable line: “Say goodbye to the person I once was.”

It’s potent, yet still maintains an airy quality that the band consistently charges so well. The ethereal, rhythmic guitar tones from Zach Starkie and Charlie Hausfeld, and the crashing drums from Tyler Collier, enrich the heavy motifs throughout.

The song has moments of change that are perfectly representative of the complicated nature of nostalgia. It eventually slows down into a sedative bliss with sonic reverb that allows each instrument to shine. Complimented by the yearning cries of Snow, the track picks up and revels in an explosive ending that almost reads like the last tear shed on this remembrance.

Sungaze knows when to break through and when to pull back. “Always Looking Behind” is a fabulous illustration of quality dream pop, delivered by a group with incredible chemistry. They work together well to carve out incredible soundscapes that leave listeners hypnotized and frothing at the mouth for more – which is good in our case, since they’ve got a new album, ‘I’m No Longer Afraid of Heights’, lined up for release in May. We’ll be patiently awaiting new tracks from Sungaze.
