SPIRITBOX STEP INTO A NEW ERA WITH HAUNTING NEW SINGLE “MOURNING”

Spiritbox has returned with “Mourning,” a haunting and beautifully heavy new single that offers the first glimpse at what comes next for the Canadian metal powerhouse.
Released via Pale Chord / Rise Records, “Mourning” marks Spiritbox’s first new music since the release of their acclaimed sophomore album, Tsunami Sea, in March 2025. Rather than simply picking up where that record left off, the new track feels like the beginning of another evolution for a band that has made a career out of refusing to stay in one place for very long.
“Mourning” puts Courtney LaPlante’s clean vocals front and center, opening with a restrained, atmospheric quality before gradually expanding into something much bigger. Guitars, percussion, and layers of ambiance build around her as the track moves between moments of vulnerability and the crushing heaviness Spiritbox can unleash seemingly at will.
It’s that push and pull that makes “Mourning” hit so hard. Spiritbox doesn’t need to spend four minutes beating you over the head to sound heavy. There’s weight in the quieter moments, too, and LaPlante’s performance carries an emotional intensity that makes the eventual eruptions feel even larger.
The track was co-produced by guitarist Mike Stringer alongside longtime collaborator Dan Braunstein, while the accompanying music video was co-directed by Stringer and Alex Bemis. Visually, the video also appears to signal a shift. After the stark black-and-white aesthetic surrounding Tsunami Sea, “Mourning” brings color back into Spiritbox’s world.
Whether that means a completely new chapter is underway remains to be seen, but “Mourning” certainly feels like more than a leftover from the last album cycle. It’s atmospheric, melodic, emotionally heavy, and unmistakably Spiritbox, while still leaving enough unanswered questions to make whatever comes next incredibly interesting.
The timing couldn’t be much better either.
Spiritbox will kick off their Tsunami Sea UK and European tour on September 12 in Glasgow, with Jinjer and Dying Wish joining them for the run. The tour stretches through the UK and Europe before wrapping up on October 9 in Paris.
After the enormous year Spiritbox has had, “Mourning” feels less like a victory lap and more like the first step toward whatever monster they’re building next.
