“SOMEBODY DIED” MARKS THE BIRTH OF A BAND THAT’S GOING PLACES
I genuinely can’t believe that “Somebody Died” is Not Your Babe’s debut single. This song sounds like it would play at a homecoming dance of an indie coming-of-age film, and it is absolutely perfect.
I love the vocals from Cam Tyler; they’re airy, yet still carry a lot of angst. This reminds me a bit of Mannequin Pussy — a heavy-hitting, dramatic melody paired with delicate and emotional vocals.
Each part of this outfit meshes together perfectly. From the soft-spoken, yet powerful drums to the ethereal sounds echoing from the guitar, this is a song that makes you melt. It’s evident that Not Your Babe is skillful and experienced and came onto the scene with a heavy punch. Even little details, such as the transitions to different parts of the song, are flawless and provide a raw, garage sound that really makes it stand out.
To only call when something dramatic happens, such as a death, is surprising, but at its core, it represents the end of the relationship. This situation is filled with distance, too much distance for the speaker.
Throughout the track’s 3:48 duration, I kept getting pleasantly surprised. The real solidifier was the last minute, though. This song ends with a bang, and the harmonization at the end is genuinely beautiful — I literally got the chills from it. Just the way Tyler screamed “somebody died” at the end, shaking up the clever repetition, makes this a perfect finale and soothes the senses.
Now, not to be dramatic, but I love this song. This is an indie punk masterpiece. The heartbreaking yearning that entrenches the soul in “Somebody Died” makes this a must-listen and an instant hit.
