SEX MASK SINK THEIR TEETH IN WITH NEW SINGLE “LOCKJAW” AHEAD OF SELF-TITLED EP
Melbourne post-punk trio Sex Mask are back with “Lockjaw,” a frantic new single arriving just ahead of their self-titled EP, out August 21 via Unpopular.
Premiered on BBC Radio 6 Music’s New Music Fix, “Lockjaw” wastes very little time getting moving. A driving bassline pushes the whole thing forward while intricate drums, volatile guitars, and Wry Gray’s hook-heavy vocals give the track the sweaty, slightly uncomfortable energy of a packed club show. It’s post-punk with enough melody to stick in your head, but still rough enough around the edges to keep things interesting.
Lyrically, the song tackles a relationship that probably should’ve ended a while ago, but somehow keeps pulling you back in. Gray describes “Lockjaw” as a love song for two people who really shouldn’t be together, with feelings that seem to grow stronger the more distance is put between them. Romantic? Kind of. Healthy? Probably not. Great material for a post-punk song? Absolutely.
Sex Mask is made up of Wry Gray on vocals and lyrics, Vicente Moncada on drums and production, and Kaya Martin on guitar and synths. The trio has been steadily making noise outside their native Australia, pulling from early ’80s industrial, no-wave, punk, and post-punk without sounding like they’re simply cosplaying another era. Their previous Body Broker EP arrived in late 2025, while some of their early releases have already racked up millions of streams.
The new self-titled EP arrives August 21 via Unpopular, but Sex Mask aren’t planning on sitting around after release day. The band heads overseas later this month for an extensive UK and European run that includes Dublin, Newcastle, Edinburgh, Leeds, Brighton, London, Berlin, Copenhagen, and appearances at Brighton Psych Festival, Manchester Psych Festival, End Of The Road, and Reeperbahn Festival. Their September 3 show at The George Tavern in London is already sold out.
And they’re not done there. Sex Mask will head back to Europe in November for Pitchfork Music Festival Paris on November 8 before playing a special Plissken Festival-presented show in Athens on November 13, with more dates still to come.
“Lockjaw” is fast, weird, catchy, and over before it has a chance to wear out its welcome. With a new EP dropping tomorrow and a packed touring schedule ahead, Sex Mask is giving us plenty of reasons to keep an eye on them.
