SANGUISUGABOGG HIT THE REGENT IN LOS ANGELES LIKE A TON OF DEATH METAL BRICKS
A little rain storm couldn’t stop Sanguisugabogg from selling out The Regent Theater in Downtown Los Angeles. Touring in support of their pummeling new album, Hideous Aftermath, the Bogg boys brought some of the heaviest bands on Earth out on the road with them for their headlining trek across North America. The OG deathcore pioneers in Despised Icon and Germany’s gnarliest death metal shredders in Defeated Sanity helped prep the crowd, readying them for the onslaught of stage dives and tackle football in the mosh pit that would take place during Sanguisugabogg’s set.
Defeated Sanity have been one of the most brutal and consistently weirdest technical death metal bands in the underground scene for some time now. Their brand of intelligent caveman music, rife with jazz and funk meets slam metal tendencies, was a massive hit with fans inside the Regent. After expanding their horizons with Defeated Sanity’s masterclass in odd-timed mayhem, the crowd braced themselves for the belligerent splendor that is Despised Icon. Hot off the heels of their brand new album, Shadow Work, the Canadian deathcore champs turned the Regent into a veritable sauna with their frenzied performance onstage. Old-school tracks like “Furtive Monologue” and fan favorites like “Purgatory” saw bodies flying across the floor, while the band’s current smash single “Over My Dead Body” prompted massive screams from everyone inside the venue.
Finally, once the stage was adorned adequately with gruesome, decorative heads on spikes and severed limbs, the mighty Sanguisugabogg blessed the packed audience with their presence. The band kicked the night off with “Rotted Entanglement,” the blistering opening track from their new record, and the energy levels inside the Regent shot through the roof. Frontman Devin Swank whipped the crowd into a frenzy, growling into the mic and prompting sweaty madness in return. Fan favorites such as “A Lesson in Savagery” and “Face Ripped Off” still hit like a ton of bricks, while new ragers like “Abhorrent Contraception” proved that the future looks bright and grisly for Sanguisugabogg. These lads are definitely at the top of their game right now, and the metal world is a better, more twisted place for it.
