At the corner of indie and riot grrrl sits Rikki Rakki, a group driven by determination and distorted guitars. Their latest single, “Snaggletooth,” offers a variety of strengths for an array of tastes. Marked by lead vocalist Erika Blatnik’s unique sound, “Snaggletooth” is as enticing as an earworm. No one is safe from the grasp of that hook.
While I could yap about nerdy stuff (and I often do), the song’s heart is…exactly that! Its resonance is thanks to its quirks; though imperfect, the unpolished vibes shine through like a jar of fireflies in the summertime. The building energy around the center produces a cathartic release, a reminder of small things that make life worth it.
Music occasionally provides insight into the way others live. For example, I’m a California girl through and through, but the track captures a glimpse into life on the East Coast. There’s not even a smidge of angst or resentment in all five minutes. Instead, Blatnik earnestly rebukes “existential dread,” insisting that anyone can make their time here meaningful.
“Snaggletooth” is beautifully nostalgic without veering into dangerous territory. Instead, it’s reminiscent of freshly cut grass and subsequent stains on your knees. Blatnik’s love of the craft is contagious, and it will get her very far.
