SONG PREMIERE: GNARCISSISTS FIND COMFORT IN CHAOS IN “HI”

Six-piece Brooklyn, NY band Gnarcissists dropped their new single, "Hi," a gripping look into lead singer Matthew Orr’s headspace while writing, where in this moment, the “hospital had become almost routine” to him.

Orr was diagnosed with a connective tissue disorder that had hospitalized him after a near-fatal accident. This song explores the dark, sometimes ironic part – that pain can sometimes bring comfort, and remind you that you’re human. 

There’s just something so incredibly raw about this track. The rich, DIY feel of the fuzzy production transports you into their headspace as you record the track. It has all the garage rock essentials – that hazy guitar riff, slamming drums, sardonic vocals, and incredibly existential lyrics. 

When listening, that dueling feeling of wanting to hold on but also looking for a reason to keep going are evident. It’s conveyed by the band’s talent and chemistry, drawn from a stacked lineup featuring members from Malice K, Pretty Sick, Navy Gangs, and Taraneh.

As the last moments of the song are spent in repeated chants of “Hi,” the desperation is infectious. It feels like reaching for aid that is just slightly in sight, but far enough away that all you can do is sing.

"Hi" showcases the many talents of Gnarcissists, complementing the track's dark themes with an upbeat, catchy vibe. Their new EP, ‘Paradise Aquarium,’ is dropping Nov. 13, with six tracks that will transport you into the Gnarcissists’ world.
