PILLOWPRINCE’S NEW SINGLE “MERCURIAL” IS HELLA DREAMY

Oakland’s finest experimental group Pillowprince has outdone themselves with their new single “Mercurial.” This celestial being occasionally touches “woo-woo” territory without veering too far into the bright, white light. Instead, they remain firmly grounded; maybe it’s the meditation techniques, maybe it’s—you get it.

The slow-burn single has plenty of easter eggs sprinkled throughout for those in the know. If you’ve ever googled a tarot card meaning or searched for a higher purpose within a relationship, you’ll understand the vibes of “Mercurial.” Their positionality as BIPOC queer artists gives an extra “umph” to the song, allowing listeners to mold it to their lived experiences.

Mercury, the planet of communication, is often used metaphorically by artists and writers. However, Pillowprince’s unique spatial awareness (pun intended) allows them to compose a resonant song creatively. You don’t need any particular spiritual practice, or lack thereof, to relate to this. Instead, if you’ve ever connected to anybody, you’ll likely get it.

Pillowprince’s self-awareness, paired with healthy optimism, is contagious. They’re skilled narrators, both in musical and poetic terms. Their analogy of relationship building and ending as compared to a spiritual awakening is otherworldly.
