PHANTA CONFRONTS EXISTENTIALIST ANXIETY THROUGHOUT GRUNGE ROCK DEBUT, “STUCK”

Not to be confused with the refreshing orange carbonated beverage, PHANTA has emerged from the Cincinnati scene, looming as a threat to the establishment of existential dread in Midwest culture. They’ve faced these fears head-on, channeling them brilliantly in their debut single, “Stuck.”

Many of us have been (or are currently in) the same boat. Societal pressures encourage everyone to feel “stuck running.” Sure, we’re pressing on to the next best thing, but there has to be more to life than speeding towards the next best thing. Often, that’s what causes the existential dread; we’re pressured to be GOING constantly, but to where?

The Ohio group is off to a fantastic start sonically, with their signature sound already developing. A strong lead vocal takes center stage in the mix, gliding between introspective thoughts and articulated anger. Frontwoman Cassidy Witt effortlessly balances catharsis with emotional release and a concise vocal performance.

“Stuck” offers a strong starting point for PHANTA. Hopefully, they will continue to explore this alt-grunge hybrid sound, as it works well for them. Aesthetically, it fits like a glove thanks to Witt’s inherent vocal grit and an unmistakable roaring bassline. This song brings comfort to all Type A individuals who constantly strive to achieve big goals; someday, something will be enough for us all.
