ORRIN FIGHTS “BAD HABITS” IN FUTURISTIC NEW SINGLE
The advancement of technology has had profound implications for music. AI can generate press releases, music videos, and thoroughly mixed songs. Independent artist Orrin blurs the lines between tech-friendly music and creative ingenuity in his new single, “Bad Habits.”
This track mimics the sound Orrin was going for in his last project, but evolved maturely, more concise in his creative vision. Now, he’s earnestly opening up about a struggle with addiction—the “bad habits” the song is referring to. Sonically, the track implements a catchy beat with intentionally autotuned vocals.
Visually, the single is accompanied by a music video that follows a LEGO Orrin fighting his blocky demons. One must wonder if the footage was generated by AI, given its otherworldly style and the intricate details within it. Moral implications of AI-generated art aside, the video raises the question: what’s technology’s place in music? Will it help or destroy us, like Orrin’s “bad habits?”
I’m typically not too fond of AI-generated music or music videos. Otherwise, I believe the tech to be a unique tool that can help me brainstorm, organize, and transcribe my artist interviews, so I don’t have to listen to the grating sound of my voice for 30 minutes. The “Bad Habits” video is cool, but I can’t completely back it until I know how much human effort was put into it. I don’t “hate” AI; right now, generative AI must “borrow” concepts, ideas, and styles from somewhere—usually another human.
Overall, “Bad Habits” is a powerful track with a crucial core message that will help many others who face addiction struggles daily. Orrin’s emotional intelligence and honesty will get him far as a musician.
