MY FRIEND NOEL’S OOEY GOOEY INDIE SINGLE MAKES YOU WANT EVERY LAST DROP OF “HONEY”

Good songs are catchy, but great songs earn their merit based on repeatability. My Friend Noel might have just released their “Espresso,” except this time, it’s “Honey.” The single grooves effortlessly, gliding across a 4/4 beat without making listeners want to hit snooze. Instead, silky indie lead vocals captivate a strong lyrical narrative. Those of us who have been “manic pixie dream girls” can relate to My Friend Noel’s new song.

“Honey” romanticizes the idea of ideas. It talks about nostalgia through a pessimistic lens, sweetly reflecting on an old flame that’s burned out. Though a breakup song, it dreamily captures the nostalgic feelings that come with reminiscing about the relationship. There will always be good and evil, especially as more time passes. People tend to realize that a villain becomes less clearly depicted in the situation, instead analyzing the actions of both parties involved. “Friday nights spent alone” are dizzy in retrospect.

My Friend Noel’s lead vocal is the most intriguing aspect of the track. The instrumental is familiarly indie, but the lead vocal gives it a bit of a twist. It’s the cadence, specifically, that throws the track slightly off center. Occasionally, there are elements of other indie darlings like Mars Argo prominent in the mix. Other times, though, the vocal takes on a life of its own.

Ultimately, My Friend Noel encourages listeners to reflect on the joy in the little things. Smaller moments often become the most memorable, overtaking your memory of someone entirely.

The single ushers in the group’s EP, We’re All Friends Here. It’s shaping up to be a solid effort, with My Friend Noel potentially taking over the indie scene within the following year.
