Crack open a cold one and turn up the boombox for Marian’s new song, “Rock and Roll.” From a song that sticks true to its title, the band harnesses iconic elements of classic rock while giving it an alternative edge.
Part of their recently released EP, Play Louder, Hit Harder, the trio uses the song as a callout to reminisce.
As the bright vocals wrap you into the story, the repetition of “call out to me” cements it, creating a catchy hook that hits hard. The track chronicles the hardships of looking back on the past and moving into the future. Reminiscing about adolescence will “break your heart,” as aging brings a certain pain along with its benefits.
The message is amplified by the fuzziness that jumps out of the song.
It has a heavy DIY sound, something that would blast out of the speakers of a late-90s truck. The distorted guitar rips through your soul, taking on an extra grunge-era sound that’s hard to hate. With a slower and steadier melody, it wraps up into a heavy classic rock hit. While the bass's buzz sinks through your soul, the track maintains an overall hopeful tone.
Overall, Marian uses old and new tricks in “Rock and Roll,” creating a vibe filled with power and angst.
