MAGIC CITY HIPPIES’ “I CAN’T LET YOU GO” IS VIVID AND TANTALIZING SLICE OF HOLLYWOOD THEMED INFIDELITY COME TO LIFE
Magic City Hippies is a cool name, but I'm not sure how much they are “hippies” in the traditional sense. Nonetheless, they are “magically” tripping out musically with an expansive track of music that utilizes 2-step and acid house music to significant effect, like you are flowing in and out of a surreal reality. “I Can’t Let You Go” also has an excellent underpinning of a funk sound. All the conflicting emotions and turmoil inherent in a romantic betrayal are laid bare here. They include the longing, anger, and resilience that come with the stark and profound realization the “connection” is really over. Despite all that, the music is melodic, danceable, and bouncy fun. It recalls the eclectic sound and vibe of King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard, KAYTRANADA, Channel Tres, and Louis Cole. Magic City Hippies features Robby Hunter, Pat Howard, and John Coughlin. The group has masterfully created this engaging amalgamation and mosaic of hooky and insistent music, which wouldn’t let you go after you heard it just once.
