Bright and sunny, it only makes sense that indie rock songstress Marina Sakimoto (Shunkan) is from Los Angeles. Her newest effort, a poppy indie rock single, “Unusual Suspects,” offers a healthy dose of escapism despite featuring lyrics from a realist’s perspective.

Shunkan’s aesthetic choices are fresh and vibrant, an array of stunning colors. The layered lead vocal adds a stunning ambiance to the song, soaring through each word purposefully. Her conviction shines through, encouraging without overdoing it.

This driven indie rock single insinuates that growth isn’t linear. However, it veers away from cliche mantras or stereotypes by instead focusing on relationships with others and the self. As long as you’re trying to improve, you’re on the right track, and “Unusual Suspects” celebrates efforts while acknowledging struggles.

Sonically, Shukan’s powerful vocal range is driven by a healthy mezzo belt. Her riffs weave beautifully between distorted electric guitars and an airtight drumline. “Unusual Suspects” by Shunkan may be about growth, but it sees the artist at her best, moving towards her fullest potential.
