Newcastle’s own Knats are keeping their foot on the gas. The band just shared a new video for “Never Gonna Be A Boxer,” the latest cut from their debut album A Great Day In Newcastle, out now via Gearbox Records/Fontana.
The record has already made noise, landing at No. 2 on the Official Jazz & Blues Albums Chart, and the new visual only reinforces why.
“Never Gonna Be A Boxer” captures what Knats do best. Loose but precise, experimental but grounded. There’s a push and pull throughout the track that keeps it constantly shifting, never settling into one lane for too long. It’s rooted in jazz, but it doesn’t stay there. You can hear the band stretching into something broader, pulling in texture and attitude from outside the genre.
That approach carries through the album as a whole. Produced by Geordie Greep, A Great Day In Newcastle feels deliberate without losing its edge. There’s structure, but there’s also room to breathe, to wander, to let things get a little messy before snapping back into focus.
The video is a black-and-white stunner. Slow-motion shots of boxers sparring around a trashcan fire cut together with live musicians performing, creating something that feels raw, cinematic, and oddly intimate. It mirrors the track itself, tense, fluid, and constantly shifting between control and chaos.
