JUPE JUPE’S “KILL YOUR DARLINGS” BEAT IS MADE FOR THE BATS

Jupe Jupe released “Kill Your Darlings,” a heavy-hitting, groovy post-punk song with dramatic vocals that is a must-listen pulling up to the goth club.  It’s the first single to be released from the band's album King Of Sorrows, set to be released next year.

The track introduces itself with heavy guitar and that familiar, zingy Depeche Mode style synth that begs you to pay attention. Melodic and brooding, the vocals complement the industrial beat in a way I didn't expect.

When the vocalist creeps in with “we’re all just playing god,” the tone is absolutely incredible. Mystery enchants you as you listen to the haunting “oohs” that break up the chorus. That bass hits you like a truck, ensuring that you tap your feet along as you listen.

The surf rock guitar that guided the song distantly in the background gets its place to shine at 1:25 — providing a short but sweet solo that offers a break in the typical melody.

Lyrically, there are some dark themes, as can be seen from word choices like “kill” and “destroying.” Overall, though, the lyrics are pretty light in content, utilizing common themes in each stanza. That “drive” repetition wasn’t doing it for me, though, and felt a bit overcooked.

What this track was really made for — dark, diverting, and dramatic dancing.

That breakdown at 2:45 is the highlight of the song by far. It slows down, and the vocalist matches the energy flawlessly. I’d love to hear more of that throughout the rest of the song for variety, because it could get pretty repetitive.

“Kill Your Darlings” mirrors the dark side of the ‘80s, while adding a modern twist that draws the senses in. I’m excited to see what comes next from the band.
