JEI-RYNN’S NEW SINGLE “OK, YOU GOT ME” USHERS IN EXPLORATIVE SONGWRITING

Many new sounds have emerged since the 2000s, when “experimental” was the norm and theatrical acts like Panic! At The Disco hogged time on the airwaves. Jei-Rynn is a direct product of this complex era, exploring elements of various alternative subgenres in his new single, “ok, you got me.”

It is immediately noticeably borrowed from Hot Topic aisles that smell like Bone Daddy cologne (/positive). Clever wordplay like “Don’t make a scene/it’s too obscene” is straight out of LiveJournal entries.

“You got me” offers the perfect balance of emotional vulnerability, nostalgia, and modernity, all wrapped up with a shiny pink and black checkered bow. Similarly, a few gothic elements are sprinkled throughout the song. These progressive songwriting aspects can set Jei-Rynn apart from the crowd, insinuating that he has taken the time to understand what he is creating by studying it thoroughly.

The song’s composition is among its most impressive qualities. It breaks about halfway, transitioning in a way I haven’t heard since Panic! At The Disco or Twenty-One Pilots in their older tracks that allowed them to become household names.

Though infectiously catchy, the song provides enough substance to keep Jei-Rynn away from “one-hit-wonder” territory.
