Cass & Crossland is an indie folk-rock duo from Phoenix, AZ. The duo wears their heart on their sleeve with their latest single "The Death of Maggie Simon". It's a harmony filled, ambient folk-rock duet narrating a heartbreaking story of a woman named Maggie Simon. It's a classic story of "love and loss", with heart-wrenching lyrics like "Did you ever try to tell somebody you were gone?", the song has your body on the verge of tears the whole time. The lump in your throat feels like it will never subside, and you're left mourning the song's narrative.
"The song features a more ambient soundscape but stays true to our usual lyrical style of taking the outsider's perspective on love and loss", says the duo. "It's about the journey of losing someone to something out of your control and the questions and emotions that play in one's head throughout that process." Their warm, silky harmonies embody the same sonic ground reminiscent of Maggie Rogers. It's new, but it's familiar like a friend you haven't seen in years but still carries a part of your heart with them.
You'd think the beauty in C&C’s vocals will ease the blow of the obliterating lyrics of love and loss, but ironically, they add to it. Their lyrics are emotional, they have a depth that’s made out of wisdom, they speak of love and loss, but it's worth mentioning this duo has a lighthearted side to them. They enjoy harmonizing, long walks on the beach, and were "very upset that Taco Bell took potatoes off their menu". Their social media presence encourages you to "drink Lacroix, wear your heart on your sleeve, and give a damn". Excellent words to live by.
