“GRAND PARADE” BY NEVIN IS A WELCOMED MOVE TO THE DARK SIDE

Nevin released “Grand Parade,” the emotional tell-all title track from her new EP. The song, clocking in at almost 5 minutes, boasts incredibly melodic instrumentals and haunting vocals that blend into an excellent indie darkwave track.

Sound effects like whispering wind pair nicely with her wispy, reverb-heavy vocals. The echoed guitar, piercing synths, and explosive backing drums are incredible additions. Bass in this song, quiet but mighty, takes it to another level and puts it on the gothic map. Each instrument layers a powerful sound that births the gloomy atmosphere. Production is really stellar on this track.

Nevin’s stern, deep vocals in this track almost remind me of Rosegarden Funeral Party. Both are daring, creative, and overall pleasing to the ears. Nevin explores themes of retrospection and moving on in fiery lyrics and delivery.

Towards the end of the song, it transitions into a slow, shoegaze buildup, her vocals almost drowned out in fuzz. It then breaks into a crescendo of noise, highlighting all the instruments. The drum solo goes hard, and the payoff is well worth it in this track.

While Nevin’s previous releases took on a more ethereal, dreampop indie sound, she really explores the darker side of music in “Grand Parade.” I really hope Nevin leans into this going forward, as this was a wonderful, experimental song that worked in her favor.
