GAG SALON CONFRONTS CONSUMER EXPECTATIONS IN THEIR NEW SINGLE “MAN’S AN ARTIST”
2025 marks a fascinating part of music history. People are more creative than ever; many could argue that the oversaturation of today’s pop charts fuel artistic intentions. This is certianly true for Gag Salon, who are canonically recognized as a pop group—though you shouldn’t expect them to write the sequel to “Espresso.” Their groovy new single “Man’s An Artist” creates commentary not only lyrically, but physically.
Instead, they encapsulate what Lady Gaga was referring to when she named her record “ARTPOP.” There are plenty of ways for pop music to scratch our ears, and Gag Salon does it just right. I wasn’t sure if I’d be into it from the first few seconds. However, about 15 seconds in, I really understood what was going on.
Lyrically, the track talks about obsession through the lens of a fan-to-artist relationship. These days, we would call such a dynamic “parasocial,” but Gag Salong describes it as, “a deer in headlights.” The most fascinating lyrical choice is the repeated idea of “cutting (him) open.” A society driven by instant gratification and simultaneous hyperfixation leaves little room for dynamics deep enough to “cut (someone) open.” It’s one of those songs that’s paired with a funky enough beat that you don’t realize how gripping the lyrics truly are.
Try to stick around for Gag Salon and “Man’s An Artist.” Though it’s a steady climb, it’s one well worth it. Train your attention span to appreciate art pop in its fullest glory.
