FIGHT BACK MOUNTAIN UNLEASHES EMOTIONALLY-DRIVEN ANTHEM “STICKER BOOK”

With the driven passion of artists like Hawthorne Heights and a gritty lead vocal resembling Bowling For Soup, Fight Back Mountain could find itself atop the post-wave emo band hierarchy. Their new single, “Sticker Book,” has an incredible backstory, but it’s established by strong instrumentation and lead vocals.

Lyricist/guitarist Anjelica Aquilino says the song holds deeply personal meanings, which are made clear by each band member’s emotionally evocative performance. Slow-building, clean-toned electric guitars highlight emotional vulnerability within the first few seconds. Sometimes, the Lemmy-style gritty lead vocals are overshadowed by distorted rhythm sections in the chorus. Otherwise, the mix is relatively even, although the intensity is occasionally overwhelming.

Of course, the sudden and overwhelming crescendo explored a shift in emotion, highlighting the big feelings experienced by the narrator. Still, little nuances in the vocal performance could be emphasized when the guitars' gain is cranked up. This could reflect Aquilino's taking on double duty as both lyricist and guitarist, playing out her emotions through her instrument, which is a notable and admirable touch.

“Sticker Book” is a fantastic effort to soften things for a band like Fight Back Mountain. Previously, they leaned heavily onto their hardcore influences. However, their sensitive side shines brightly, encouraging others to find comfort in shared experiences.

After two previous full-length LPs, the band has seemingly found their signature sound and style. They have a cool demeanor, but a vulnerable edge gives them depth and instrumental precision. “Sticker Book” is moving as it is musically proficient.
