DEATHSPORT REIMAGINES WANG CHUNG’S “DANCE HALL DAYS” TRANSCENDING MERE NOSTALGIA

Brothers Mike And Tom Zitzelsberger are the duo that comprise Deathsport hailing from Munich, Germany, and felt compelled to cover Wang Chung’s “Dance Hall Days.” Though it’s a bit of a jolt to the system to hear a band with a hardcore, extreme name called Deathsport take on a song like this one, which is so far removed from that wild moniker. Nonetheless, this reviewer kept an open mind and reserved judgment listening to the new track.

Deathsport has a lot of love for Wang Chung. The duo said in their bio they heard it on German radio and have drawn inspiration from the 80s with its minimalist, catchy song structures. The single is a significant and defining moment of new wave music in the 1980s. The song was hugely popular, charted very high way back in the day, and appeared in several movie soundtracks.

It is an intelligent move for Deathsport to bring it back and resurrect it from decades ago. Doing so, they infuse the track with a new vibe and shoegazer, dream pop bent while keeping the flavor of the original single’s intrinsic essence intact.
