“CONSTELLATIONS” BY MIDSUMMER DREAM BRINGS YEARNING BACK TO POP PUNK
Midsummer Dream has taken more inspiration from Shakespeare than their band name. Their new single, “Constellations,” features lyrical themes like Romeo and Juliet’s classic star-crossed lovers. This song has a lot of heart, with a story taken from personal experiences within the band.
Old-school pop punk always had a hint of vulnerability lingering about it. Tons of anthemic pop-punk hits talk about yearning for something in the great beyond (with a tendency to mention a deep hatred of the lyricist’s hometown). “Constellations” doesn’t necessarily hate where the vocalist is from, but he does suggest he’d much rather be somewhere else!
The song is catchy and upbeat, with a classic vibe to round it out. The band does some cool tricks, adding synthy elements like little sprinkles in different places. It’s got a sort of neon pop-punk energy to it that could revive the space if continuously built upon.
The build at the bridge is nice, with a repeated motif carrying it to the fade out at the end. It’s a tried and true pop-punk technique; there certainly is an audience for Midsummer Dream, and hopefully, their music continues to reach its target audience.
