CARNE TURN ’90S ALT-ROCK NOSTALGIA INTO SOMETHING MASSIVE ON “MSG”
British alternative rockers CARNE have an infectious new single titled “MSG,” and this thing sounds built to blow up speakers and find a permanent home on your playlist.
Channeling the glory days of ’90s grunge and alternative rock, CARNE take those familiar loud-soft dynamics and add plenty of their own muscle. At the center is vocalist Carmen Millino, whose performance shifts from soft and playful to absolutely massive without ever sounding forced.
That shifting vocal attack fits perfectly with the guitars. During the verses, they slither around in the background, patiently waiting for their moment before exploding into huge walls of distortion when the chorus arrives. The contrast gives “MSG” its bite, letting the quieter moments breathe before everything comes crashing back in.
Holding it all together is a rhythm section that absolutely stomps. A foot-stomping kick drum and stomach-rumbling bass provide the foundation, giving Millino plenty of room to launch her vocals straight out of your headphones and into your head.
There’s plenty of ’90s DNA running through “MSG,” but CARNE aren’t simply digging through the past. They take that influence, turn up the volume, and make it their own.
