BROOKLYNVEGAN, ALT PRESS, AND REVOLVER HIT BY REPORTED MASS LAYOFFS
Nearly all the editorial staff at BrooklynVegan, Alternative Press, Revolver and Goldmine were laid off yesterday — each under the umbrella of parent company Veeps. The news comes alongside a trend of sweeping journalism layoffs throughout the country.
Word originally spread when publicist Jacob Daneman posted on X, “RIP Brooklyn Vegan. Absolutely bewildering … Utterly unceremonious and moronic actions by Veeps.” Daneman then replied to a comment that the New York-based publication will cease operations. Pitchfork then confirmed the news, reporting that nearly all emails to BrooklynVegan staff bounced back.
Veeps was founded in 2017 by Good Charlotte brothers Benji and Joel Madden, initially operating as a livestream ticketing platform. In 2021, Veeps became part of Live Nation, and according to Pitchfork, has owned each of the publications for a couple of years.
Many have taken to social media to comment on the loss, including actor Elijah Wood, posting an X reply with a single disappointed emoji.
The publications each respectfully showcase a snippet of music history. Goldmine was founded in 1970 and published print media for record collectors. Alternative Press was started in 1985 and has been a hub for artist news and interviews for decades. Revolver has had a stake in the hard rock and metal scene since its start in 2000. Additionally, BrooklynVegan was founded in 2004 in New York by Dave Levine, whose email was the only one that reached Pitchfork.
One user wrote about the news on r/indieheads:
“We had such a vibrant online media ecosystem through the 00's and a good chunk of the 10's and so much of it is gone or just completely hollowed out.”
Veeps did not immediately respond to Get Some Magazine’s request for comment.
