JOHNNY MANCHILD AND THE POOR BASTARDS RETURN WITH GROOVY NEW SINGLE “VOLUNTARY ANIMALS”

Before you question their name, please consider that Johnny Manchild And The Poor Bastards are a gift to the next wave of alt-rock. Their style nods to a lot of the alternative greats, but I’d love to see them on a bill next to I DONT KNOW HOW BUT THEY FOUND ME. Their Beatles-esque approach to alternative music is incredibly satisfying, especially in their new single, “Voluntary Animals.”

Johnny Manchild’s vocal style is, ironically, incredibly mature. It offers an almost raspy, soulful perspective to existential themes presented throughout the song. Though a self-proclaimed manchild, Johnny possesses acute self-awareness. He recognizes that everybody struggles with “figuring it out.” His empathetic approach provides comfort, especially in the turbulent times we live in.

However, it’s his vocal style that truly reminds me of Dallon Weekes. They are distinctly different, but would complement each other perfectly—especially with the themes Johnny tends to write about. Someone needs to get these two in the studio together ASAP.

Sonically, the single is so freaking satisfying to listen to. Casual music listeners and total dweebs (hi) alike will find joy and comfort in “Voluntary Animals.” Johnny Manchild And The Poor Bastards only gets stronger with each release, and it is a true pleasure to take a peek inside Johnny’s brain every time.
