“ADAM IN YOUR DM'S” BY SUBPAR SNATCH IS UNRELENTING FROM START TO FINISH

Subpar Snatch delivers true Riot Grrrl energy from Austin, TX. Jess Scott’s vocal performance is evocative, yet crystal clear. Though the song is based on a pop culture moment (sorry Mr. Levine), the entire performance evolves past an otherwise small blip in time. We may someday forget the Maroon 5 frontman’s scandal, but we won’t forget Subpar Snatch’s witty lyricism and tight instrumental.

The group does an excellent job at a lot of things, but one fine detail stands out. Recording styles are not often discussed at large, but it appears they are intentionally calling back to older methods of recording. It feels like a live performance– granted, an immensely impressive live performance, but more “real” than a lot of computerized stuff we hear today.

In the true spirit of Riot Grrrl music, they of course are dedicated to dismantling the patriarchy, but not without cause. It’s not so much about The Voice coach cheating on his supermodel wife, but rather, the idea that anyone can choose to do bad, regrettable things if the adrenaline is high enough.

Subpar Snatch is off to an immaculate start this year with “Adam In Your DMs.” If anything, we need some good old-fashioned punk rock now more than ever before!
