BIZOU MAKES A KILLER RETURN WITH NEW SINGLE “DEATH MAG”

Bizou [bee-zoo], noun. The word has French origins and translates to “a kiss.” But for those with exceptional music taste, it means rocking the f**k out.

The Los Angeles-based band formed in 2017 and comes with one hell of a pedigree. Bizou features frontwoman Marisa Prietto, formerly of Wax Idols; Nicole Fiorentino, former bassist of The Smashing Pumpkins; and Josiah Mazzaschi and Niki Nevlin of Light FM.

Bizou has released several singles and EPs over the years, and on August 13, they return with their newest single, “Death Mag.” Considering the musical backgrounds behind this band, expectations are already high, and thankfully, “Death Mag” delivers.

The track pulls together elements of ’80s synth-pop, indie rock, and even flashes of nu-metal. It starts relatively slow but remains upbeat, gradually building around a melody that brings to mind Kate Bush’s “Running Up That Hill.” When the chorus finally hits, it’s immediately catchy, landing somewhere between the alternative bite of Garbage and the darker, heavier melodies of Evanescence.

By the time the bridge arrives, the energy kicks up another notch. If you aren’t moving by this point, we’re not really sure what to tell you. Between the heavier breakdowns, shimmering synths, and indie-rock backbone, “Death Mag” feels equally suited for a packed rock club or dancing your ass off at a discotheque.

Bizou hasn’t released new music or played live since 2023, making “Death Mag” a very welcome return. Give it a listen when it drops August 13. We promise you’ll feel at least a smidge cooler afterward.
