SHOEGAZE SUPERSTARS LOZENGE ARE BACK WITH “SILVER”
Bright and uncompromising, Lozenge recently dropped “Silver,” a heavy shoegaze single with a commanding presence. Riding off the high of their successful 2024 EP, ‘Blink Into Nothing,’ The UK band is back to give another dose to atmospheric alt-rock fans.
The single opens with an explosion of powerful guitar that drives the track's energy. The ripping guitar that’s reminiscent of Sonic Youth, with the wispy, far-off sound of My Bloody Valentine, the track is wispy in true shoegaze fashion. That riff is absolutely sickening; the way that they’re able to make it both heavy and airy should be studied.
Lozenge refuses to let their energy wane at any point, bending the instruments into a satisfying ambient sound. With the satiating vocals of frontman Joe Collinson, the track explores recollection and loss. Lyrics of death give it a darker edge, tackling the brutality of living and dying.
The song packs many twists and turns inside of the 4-minute package, keeping you on your toes the entire listen. It’s powerful and pervasive, each turn equally as catchy as the last. One thing it consistently maintains, though, is the spitting energy the band consistently performs so well.
As a whole, “Silver” is handcrafted to perfection. From Collinson’s shredding prowess, the melodic drums of Jacob Marston, to the deep bass sounds from Joe Clarke, it’s clear that the band works together seamlessly. It’s a track that’s emotional and honest, one that truly understands itself. It’s a great introduction to the genre and the band.
