ZACH SAVAGE’S NEW ALBUM ‘BUH-BYE’ IS LOW-FI PERCOLATING INDIE POP

The first time I listened to the 10 tracks of Zach Savage's latest LP, Buh-Bye, I was thoroughly underwhelmed and wondered if this “project” merits or deserves a review. Could I be objective? Rave and shout from the rooftops. This is so great that I can’t get the music and lyrics out of my head. No, not really. ‘Buh-Bye’ is so gentle and mellow. It’s technically and proficiently played and sung. I don’t hear any songs that sound like instant classics. It’s free-form and just effortlessly floats from one track to another.

But I think as a reviewer, I need to keep an open mind. I have tried to give ‘Buh-Bye’ another shot. However, my rule of thumb is repeated listening to see or trying hard to “like” the album; it isn’t a good sign. There’s undeniable immediacy and, yes, something compelling in my mind when you embark on reviewing any music; there should be key elements that bowl you over for the most part.

However, now I have had a slight change of mind. Zach Savage puts forward a more dynamic and urgent vocal performance than I initially thought. The music isn’t as listless, dull, or sleep-inducing (boring?) as I perceived.

This album has some vitality and energy to it. His musings and perspectives about life and love do pique my interest more. Nothing here is necessarily groundbreaking or innovative, but it is more personal. That’s hard to judge as a critic. Zach’s journey and path is “where he is and going.” That said, I do admire real depth and complexity in lyrics. The craft does matter in my book.

Now I like ‘Buh-Bye’ more and can appreciate and respect what Zach Savage has created as a singer/songwriter and musician with ‘Buh-Bye.’ There is something for everyone and every audience. Zach Savage has successfully tapped in and delivered that with his new release.
