YELLOW PAGES’ NEW BANGER “MY DYING HEART” IS GETTING EVERYONE READY FOR POP-PUNK SUMMER
Yellow Pages has clearly done their homework, masterfully curating an iconic pop-punk sound. They are a few years too late to grace Warped Tour stages, but their songwriting pays homage to the greats while emphasizing their unique presence in a revitalized, modern scene. The song, “My Dying Heart” is recognizably pop-punk goodness that can only be achieved by a lifetime of studying a genre.
Listeners can tell they’re in for a good time from the first few seconds of the track. The muted introduction is a classic technique in many a pop-punk anthem, but this iteration doesn’t feel tired or overdone. Instead, the band has created their full guitar tones and vocal range, energizing audiences who yearn for more than a brief hit of nostalgia.
Auto-tune has a bad rep; for most, it’s an artistic tool used intentionally throughout a song. I love how they did this in “My Dying Heart.” Combined with the insane screams, the lead vocal compliments the entire track, especially since it also features heavy guitars.
The single is lyrically strong, too, deviating away from what could be a corny pop-punk approach. Of course, the genre has always been tongue-in-cheek heavy, but there are ways to achieve that kind of sound without being cheesy—and Yellow Pages has learned how to do this like seasoned pros.
As the saying goes, Yellow Pages may have just dropped the song of the summer!
