“VAST” BY CARNE SCRATCHES A TONY HAWK PRO SKATER-SIZED VOID IN OUR HEARTS

Maybe we’re still coming down from the Warped Tour high here at GSM…OR…maybe…. ”VAST” by CARNE feels just like it came out of a Tony Hawk Pro Skater soundtrack. I’m just saying—after watching him do a few flips with my own two eyeballs—I know what I’m talking about. This is legit skate punk, just wrapped in a 2025 bow. The single’s album artwork even pays homage to classic DIY zines. They could easily pass these out at merch and have their fans collect them.

Sonically, the track shreds; I can honestly say I wasn’t expecting any of this when I hit “play.” I should have, because the artwork really is a giveaway for the rest of the single. Still, it’s full of surprises from start to finish. That bassline is freaking incredible. I can’t find a more eloquent way to describe it in the realm of my typical, nerdy analyses. Rather, it stands on its own, bringing grit to the song that contrasts with a silky, smooth lead vocal. There’s a lot of good stuff going on in alternative music right now. However, CARNE still feels different and fresh to the ears.

Mind you, all I do all day is listen to music.

So that’s saying something.

The track sits at the perfect cornerstone of nostalgic MTV grunge and modern alt. CARNE has managed to encapsulate the nostalgic rush without forcing themselves into a gimmick. Instead, they’ve decided to play what feels right to them, and “VAST” hits just right.
