TOP TEN RECORDS OF 2020 ACCORDING TO BRETT!

I know readers out there are so tired of reading about new, hip artists and want to read more writers that are entertainment recluses with little to no interest in hearing something new. Welcome to my top ten.

10. Sam Morrill - I Got This

Nobody said this has to be top ten music albums. Sam Morrill is one of the strongest joke writers today. He knows how to cut the fat of a sentence and strictly give you a set-up and punchline, which has floated him to the top of the New York comedy scene.

9. Sevendust - Blood & Stone

The first good album in a decade, since guitarist and main songwriter Clint Lowery returned for Cold Day Memory. Lajon Witherspoon launches a vocal rocket into the damn sky with the band's Soundgarden cover of "The Day I Tried to Live." The semi title track "Blood From a Stone" rules too.

8. Killer Be Killed - Reluctant Hero

There's a lot of pressure on supergroups. They're never quite the sum of their parts. Reluctant Hero is surprisingly better than their debut. The stand-out song is the title track with a sweet lil' second half-sung by someone else featured on this top ten.

7. Cardioid - Fantasy Metal

Lizzy Ellison's croon has me convinced she is Roy Orbison reincarnated. "Holiday" is a jam you put on while you're on your way to get revenge on someone but on the way you just stop for ice cream and bring them a cone.

6. Phoebe Bridgers - If We Make It Through it Through December

Yes, "Kiyoto" rocks but Mz. Bridgers' sophomore outing didn't hit me as hard as her debut. Considering most Christmas albums are famously corny and desperate reaches for cash, at least now there is a holiday record for people who have a lot of crumbs in their bed and can't get over their ex from three relationships ago.

5. Jerky Boys - self-titled

How does this work? A new Jerky Boys album in 2020, decades after the invention of caller ID? Human ingenuity. All the classic characters are back and even a new one makes me guffaw. Please listen to Sol Rosenberg call customer service after attaching a knife to a Roomba.

4. Machine Head - Civil Unrest

Over the summer, during the growing awareness of police-related iniquity, many artists were speaking out about the racial injustice that is unfortunately ingrained in American systems. Sadly, very few in the metal community followed suit. Except for Robb Flynn and Jesse Leach of Killswitch Engage who guests on "Stop the Bleeding." This protest EP rules and feels right.

3. Every Album I Liked Decades Ago Because I'm in My 30s

Four artists on this list are ones I listened to in high school. What do you want from me? Killswitch Engage's Alive or Just Breathing kicks ass, dude.

2. Haim - WiMPIII

Finally, the world will see that women can make good music too. These sisters continue to sharpen the blades of their songwriting skills with every record. I cannot believe how many killer pop tunes they continue to present us. We are not worthy. And as a 90s R&B fan, "3 AM" makes me want to call pick up a landline and chat with my BFFL about our crushes.

1. Greg Puciato - Child Soldier: Creator of God

25 years ago, Alternative music was actually an alternative to something and not an archaic, meaningless label you call your band because you wear leather jackets. Child Soldier is a time portal into '90s aggressive alt, while also peeking into some new wave along your trip. Put it on rotation and use this as a filter to remind yourself what a dark, apprehensive year 2020 was and scream your lungs out until you have COVID-19 like symptoms.
